[Guide] to setting up a Portal
« on: July 15, 2006, 12:05:32 pm »
Well there's been a load of questions about this feature so I figured why not make a guide!

EDIT: THIS INFORMATION IS NO LONGER CORRECT DUE TO CHANGES MADE IN THE PORTAL!
I'll fix it all up in the future.

Edit: I am updating it now. It isn't finished

The Portal
[/size][/b]

Step 1) Set up a Board with all of your News (Optional: You only need to do this if you plan to have news in your prtal)
You will need to create a board that will contain all of your news. The portal will display the names of these topics and the contents of the frst post.
You can do that under Manage Boards in your AdminCP

Step 2) Enabling the Portal

- Go to your AdminCP->Portal Settings
- Check the "Enable Portal" box
- Choose the board with all of your news. (Optional: Only needed if you plan to use the portal for news)
- Choose the news items to display
- Choose the number of Recent Topics to Display (Optional again, only if you plan to display Recent Topics in your Portal)
- Choose the poll topic ID of the poll you want to display in your portal. (Again optional. Only if you plan you plan to have a poll)
The poll topic ID is simply the part in bold below
http://yoursite.smfforfree.com/board/1.0.html

Save your settings.

Step 3) Setting up the Portal
Note: To create a very effective portal you may want to learn some basic HTML. http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp

Now goto "Portal Code" under the Portal Settings(AdminCP)
(I circled it in yellow in the picture below)

You should see a box. All the seperate codes for the features SMF gave us are below the box. The box is circled in red.
Feel free to add yor own code in that box as well. Like HTML, Javascript and all that for example!

I have a couple pre-made layouts here
Feel free to ask/use the already made codes there or request a portal there.
