Title: [Guide] Custom Smiles - Upgrade Option
Post by: SMF For Free on June 06, 2006, 08:43:15 am
[Guide] Custom Smiles - For Ultimate subscribers and upgrade option
Admin > Ad Free & Upgrades - Purchase Custom Smiles Upgrade

In this guide you will learn how to add custom smiles to your forum.

Go to Admin > Smileys and Message Icons

Step 1:
a:  Put a Checkmark in:   Enable Customized Smileys

     b.   If you previously used a Photobucket Account as the Base Url for the smileys on your forum or if you used the url for the smileys you see here at the Support forum, you will need to return the Url back to Default.     If you used the smf smileys also delete the smf smiley set on the Settings page.    If you did neither click "Save Changes" and move on to Step 2.

To put the Base Url Back to Default:
In "Base URL to all smiley sets":   Use http://text.smfforfree.com/Smileys
NOTE    Replace text.smfforfree.com with YOUR forums url.
    Click "Save Changes".

     (https://www.smfsupport.com/support/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi148.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs20%2Fsmfstyles%2Fsmileysbaseurl.gif&hash=b672d711f2ebeb64b8a4caa9a02b1508805499a7)

Step 2 Click  "Smiley Sets"

In Smiley Sets click on the "New Smiley Set" Button

(https://www.smfsupport.com/support/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi148.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs20%2Fsmfstyles%2Fsmileys2.gif&hash=f0fa91f6a1765581de14aa9453c1974c7e93846f)

Step 3
You can call the name of your smiley set what ever you want.
Just two things are important.
1.  First make sure that default smiley set is checked.
2.  Last And most important of all make sure the url is users/yoursubdomainnamehere
For example
If your url is http://demo.smfforfree.com
Then your subdomain would be "demo"
You would use users/demo  as the smiley set url.

(https://www.smfsupport.com/support/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi148.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs20%2Fsmfstyles%2Fsmileys3.png&hash=45ce75e25740a7d26fe5a522fb8a1ec0c12945dd)

Step 4 After you created your smiley set it is time to upload smilies.
First click on "Add Smiley" menu link on the page.
Now make sure that "Upload New Smiley" is selected.
Next browse for a smiley image on your computer.
Make sure that same image for all smiley sets is selected.
Enter the smiley code you wish to use for the image and make a short description and where you want the image to show.
Then click the "Save Changes" button.

[(https://www.smfsupport.com/support/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi148.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs20%2Fsmfstyles%2Fsmileys4.gif&hash=ab949a1fa2bc0980153229d1baf5c91df1f9eceb)

The first time you upload a new smiley it will copy over the images from the default smiley set.

Step 5
Almost done!  This is the last step:
Go to Admin > Current Theme
Choose the name of the smiley set you created.

(https://www.smfsupport.com/support/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi148.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs20%2Fsmfstyles%2Fsmileys5.png&hash=127bd774c05775c7c7f89dcc787550968a62d4a2)

You are now finished and can enjoy using custom smiles on your forum.

Enjoy,

I set it up you need to upload your smiles though. You forgot to create a new smiley set.

Thanks.  But I *did* create a smiley set..  just deleted it.  Well, twice anyway.  Because of the all the smilies showing up as red x's...  *shrugs*  I'll try again...  ;)
Title: Re: [Guide] Custom Smiles
Post by: PKAerynSun1 on August 07, 2006, 06:50:54 pm
Sigh...  It's *still* showing red x's..    "Smiley not found in set(s): myforum" every smilie I've uploaded today is not showing up, either with the sets I tried to create or the one you created. So either my browser is stupid and just not showing them, or somehow the url isn't right, or something. (maybe I'm just dumb, who knows)

*pulls hair out*

Thanks..  *wanders off*
Title: Re: [Guide] Custom Smiles

You will need to upload all the smiles you want to use first cause it does not copy over the default smiles so they go to x's since they no longer exist. So you ned to upload a smlie for all the old ones.

When you go to the page to pay with paypal it has a country dropdown box.  I would assume it handles it fine and would charge you whatever it would be in pounds.

How do you do this??? I keep trying and it doesnt seem to work.  :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff:

I've tried naming the smilies I'm uploadin the same names as the default so they cover them, that didn't work. I tried new names and they show up in the list but no pics, just the new name and code.  :idiot2: :idiot2: :idiot2:

You left the "3" off the url     ;)

Problems been corrected.    So others know this -  if you previously used the smf smileys (the ones you see here at support) you need to remove that smiley set from the Settings page.  Otherwise when you try to upload a smiley it trys to upload it to that set too (and cannot) so it fails for YOUR set as well.

I edited the Guide and made a note about this.

Why do you have to pay for this, when other boards have this automatically where you can add smileys.

Why do you have to pay for this, when other boards have this automatically where you can add smileys.

Let's please not use the Guides to complain about options that require a fee.

If you do not wish to pay to upload your smileys you can change them/replace them by following this guide:
How to replace your Smileys (http://www.smfsupport.com/support/guides_and_tutorials/guide_how_to_replace_your_smileys-t3679.0.html;msg18467#msg18467)

Any ideas why this is happening?  (thanks for your help in advance)

Have you restarted at the beginning of the guide and done it over?

Read through each step carefully to make sure you've done each step correctly. If this doesn't solve your problem, could you please do your best to give us a description of what you did?

What part do you need help with?
Title: Re: [Guide] Custom Smiles - Upgrade Option
Post by: truthquest on September 12, 2012, 06:46:15 pm
What part do you need help with?
Step 1. I'm confused because I don't know what the previously used were so I don't know exactly what to do there.

If I delete the smf smiley set, do I need to upload smilies before I even do that? Do I need to use something like photobucket?

Just move on to Step 2 I don't think you did either
Ok let me try that. First I have to do this.  To put the Base Url Back to Default:
In "Base URL to all smiley sets":   Use http://text.smfforfree.com/Smileys
NOTE   Replace text.smfforfree.com with YOUR forums url.
    Click "Save Changes".
I'm not seeing "Base URL to all smiley sets". And when I put a checkmark in Enable Customized Smileys and clicked save, I saw double smilies on the forum.

Step 2 Click  "Smiley Sets"

Skip that part too keep going down till
Step 2 Click  "Smiley Sets"
Do I need to checkmark Enable Customized Smileys? Okay I didn't do that.
I clicked smiley sets and now I see Default, Name, URL, Modify.
I don't see New Smiley Sets. I see Smiley Sets and Settings. I clicked on Smiley Sets and nothing changed.
Alright I found New Smiley Sets.  :) Trying to figure out the URL now. Users? Option is Users or smfnew. I clicked Default smiley set. I don't see Import Smileys Already in This Directory. So what happens when I click save?  :-\

Step 4 I guess. I haven't created a smiley set.

Ok, I thought I knew how to do this.   If I have another smfforfree forum using photobucket as the base for smileys will it interfere with a second one?  And I don't seem to be able to replace the base url with the one I want to use.
