[Guide] Adding a ChatBox
« on: January 02, 2009, 01:04:24 am »
Forum Url: http://pwnedscape.smfforfree2.com
Hey guys, im gonna show you how to add a chatbox at the top or bottom of your forum page :)

First of all you need to register a chatbox, so go to http://www.freeshoutbox.net/ and create a chatbox account at the bottom.

Now your registered logon to your chatbox. you will see an example of your chatbox and some code under it, copy this code.

Now go to your forum's admin CP and click on "Manage styles", now go to "headers/footers".
If you want the chatbox at the top of your forum add it in headers, if you want it at the bottom, add it in footers.
Now paste your code into witchever box you chose, and change the height="300" to height="175" and the width="500" to width="1007". now your chatbox will fit perfectly on your forum page.

Hope this helps :D

You can also get chat/shoutboxes from these places:
www.cbox.ws
www.yellbox.com
www.myshoutbox.com
www.shoutmix.com
www.shoutbox.us
www.tag-board.com
www.tagboards.tk
www.tagboardsite.com/
www.xat.com/

If you wanted to you could also add a chat to a board description. Doing all the same as above, but instead of putting it in the footers, you could paste the given code into a board description.

You can also make a webpage with the Webpage Editor, and put the HTML there. Then you could create a tab.

I would suggest you to use Xat, its really an awesome chatbox ^.^ and like Madcap22 said. its better to make your own Tab whit a chat box. easier for the users to find it, just click "Chat"  ;)

I have yet to find a shoutbox that has everything I need

-customizable skin and color to match the board
-administrative control over who posts and what is posted
-names appearing on the side of the box so you know who's in there at any given time

the xat.com shoutbox is one of the nicest I've seen but no administrative control (at least in the free version) and when you log onto a site that has the box it automatically places a dummy user ID in there that you need to change, even if you don't plan on using the box, which is weird...unless I didn't figure it out correctly.

If anyone has found such a box it would be great to hear from them.

cbox will do all of that (and more) except for having a list of who is in the cbox at the time on the side.
http://cbox.ws/

Ive used it a lot over the years, on different sites.. its very customizeable so you can make it fit in with your forum no matter what color you are using.   Can change the size of it however you like,  change the smileys in it...  ban people from using it...  delete posts you want out of it.    Etc etc.   http://cbox.ws/    It doesnt have that list on the side but its a good shoutbox.    If paid for there are even more options like having it email you all the new entrys in it daily,  who's online display, setting it so that people must login to it to use it, etc.   Check the features on their page.

I've tried that one too.

It's important for me to have the list on the side, otherwise it looks "vacant" and people just don't use it. That's why out of only 3 "must have's", the list to the side is one of them.

I used a Java Chat box once, that was pretty good and did all of it, the problem there is that if you just make it a link, no one knows if anyone's in there and again it just sits. If you embed it in the page, then it's all right there, but there was a problem when I did that too, I forget what it was...something about when you reload the forum something happens to the chat box, maybe it was a speed issue or something of that nature.

I have used the xat one and put it in my webpage editor i really like this one as you dont need to click refresh like you do with some of the other ones. i also have a shoutbox on my board which is great too as guests can talk on it.

I actually had a convo with a guest last week who ended up egistering on my forum lol

OK people.... a silly question I suspect, but is there a chat-app out there which will hook into the user names of the users?

And if not - is SMF OK with the idea of myself building one which they can integrate into their boards?

Cheers!
