OK people.... a silly question I suspect, but is there a chat-app out there which will hook into the user names of the users?
And if not - is SMF OK with the idea of myself building one which they can integrate into their boards?
Cheers!
smf has an available chat module which integrates seamlessly into the software, and forum users have the same chat user IDs and admins and moderators have the same rights in the chat room as they do on the board. However, integrated chat is not possible with the smfforfree service because, as posted elsewhere on this board, the additional server costs are prohibitively expensive. If you could code a chat room that would work the same way and somehow provide a hosting service for it I am sure the members here would be very appreciative of it, I know I would be.

Either add the code for one in an HTML ezBlock, or you could enable the Shoutbox ezBlock. (Before putting the shout box block in make sure that it's enabled under ezPortal settings.)

Decide where you want the Shoutbox to be on your forum. In your Header or Footer: Admin > Manage Styles > Edit Header/Footer
In a board description: Create a board for the shoutbox, paste the shoutbox code in the boards description area. Its nice to do it this way as you can limit who can see it by the boards permissions.
In a Portal block: Make an html block and put the code in there.

So I can make it be at the very top of the forum? And resize it to the width of it also? How hard is it to do? I am a newbie to owning a forum... cbox will do all of that (and more) except for having a list of who is in the cbox at the time on the side. http://cbox.ws/Ive used it a lot over the years, on different sites.. its very customizeable so you can make it fit in with your forum no matter what color you are using. Can change the size of it however you like, change the smileys in it... ban people from using it... delete posts you want out of it. Etc etc. http://cbox.ws/ It doesnt have that list on the side but its a good shoutbox. If paid for there are even more options like having it email you all the new entrys in it daily, who's online display, setting it so that people must login to it to use it, etc. Check the features on their page.

These instructions for a shoutbox are if you use one of the links provided on here for how to get a shoutbox? How do I install shoutbox on my forum w/o using one of those..and do I need a code and where do I get it from? I have tried several times with no luck.. I am a newbie to owning a forum..everything else I did fine with.. But I do have another question about under Permissions By Board, how do we know whether to have each thing set as Global or Local? And what does global or local do? Is there a way it should be set? I messed with a few..oops.. Thanks for your time and help in advance..

Global is a moderator for every board while Local is just for a specific board. Notice when you assign a Local moderator to a board their name will appear under the board next to Moderators:
