ok, whatever works for you! I save as .PNG most of the time. I dont really think about the file size lol.
Alot of people don't.
Thing is, if the file sizes are large... say a banner on your forum. It takes time for that to load, hense slowing your forum loading up. Makes a huge diff if you have alot of graphics. I kinda prefer pngs (for some things) myself but its tough to keep the size down.
Adding onto what Sibyl said,
Statistically, on average you have 7 seconds to catch someones attention when they visit your website.
If your page takes too long to load because you have unoptimized images with large filesizes you will lose a lot of members.
Large sigs, banners and avatars can cause this problem...so, always optimize as much as you can without losing too much quality.
