Hey
Im just wondering if GIF images were the only type of images that could handle animation. The reason why I want to know is that I hate that GIF images get distorted when set to animate.

Distorted?

GIF is the mostly widely used file type for animation. I hesitate to call it the only...but for the most part in the way that you are talking about it, it is the only.

png's don't animate, as a final word on those.

I mean distort by saying that the images get really GRAINY. Do you know what I mean? It loses its detail. If you could find some file types that save as animation, that would be AWESOME.

At such a low filesize like a gif is, there's no way you can have an animation that won't be so grainy.
Filetypes that small will always be lossy.

It is also going to depend on how you are setting it in your program when you save it.    How are you optimizing the images?

This smiley is a gif image that I made...   It is not grainy.

Optimizing lowers the file size, but also degrades the quality of the image.
Lower file size means it loads faster when people view it.

Sibyl is totally your optimization expert. I'll leave the specifics up to her Wink

Yeah, I used to be a real hockey fanatic...but lately I've been missing the games.

As crasy said, optimizing lowers the file size. It can also degrade the image abit... However that is dependant on how many colors are in the image, how many frames,  how indepth the animation is...   however when you optimize an animation you can also set the exact number of colors;  set the dithering, etc and it can make a huge difference in the quality of the image.   That same smiley, when not optimized was twice the file size...  after optimization it lowered the size but did not degrade the quality.  Its hard to tell you the settings.. it depends on the program you are using AND the image itself as you will change those settings for each image.

no... I dont like hockey

with Gran Paradiso (firefox v3) you can create pnga, which are animated png files.  But you have to know javascript to make them work correctly

Edit: apng not pnga

Example of one:

More info on apng here http://people.mozilla.com/~dolske/apng/demo.html

apng isn't widely used and isn't compatible with all browsers though, so I wouldn't recommend using it.
