Waaaaaaaaaaaaait a minute... I just realized I have accounts on 2 SMF support forums: "SMF for Free" (this one), and simplemachines.org...

I always assumed that "SMF for Free" was the official name for SMF... Am I missing something here? I do recall that someone once replied to a post of mine saying "sounds like you're using SMF for Free", which made me raise my eyebrows for a second, but then I did a little research, couldn't decipher anything from it, and brushed it off.

Is there a "not free" version of SMF, or something? The Wikipedia article also makes no distinction between an "SMF" and an "SMF for Free". I also tried whatever forum-searches I could try, but doing a forum-search for "SMF" here is like doing a Google search for the word "porn".

Thanks!

The smf software can be downloaded for free from simplemachines.org
We do not do support for forums that are downloaded and self hosted.
Support here is for forums hosted by the SMF for FREE service only.

SMF for Free is totally different.    We are a free forum hosting service and forums with this service use the smf software.

Simple Machines Forums or SMF is basically a forum software. You can download this software from simplemachines.org for free. However you must host the software yourself as well as deal with any errors that arise with the forum.

SMF For Free is a service that will create SMF sites for you.

We are in no way affiliated with SMF, other than using their software and hosting it for people.

SMF for Free is different from SMF.

I would 120% recommend SMF For Free to anyone. Not SMF as you have to fix bugs, and any problems that accure.

Thanks,

SMF is a forum software, which is more private, if your hosting by yourself. And if you pay good money for a website host, or just host it right of your own computer. Which requires, mysql databases, and more. People that are going to have successful websites, rather host there forum/website themselves, because, less interruptions, and more stability. The reason this website is Named "SMFFORFREE" Is because, its free, and faster then just hosting a forum yourself.

This is what I want to know on the other topic I made and now, I'm enlightened.

Another question, is it possible to transfer my Free-SMF-Forum to another SMF (hosted by other site)?

My members are worrying about the back-up of the forum.

We backup your forums ourselves.

However, due to modifications made to the software and security reasons we cannot pass on the backups to you.
If we did the modified table structure could pose a security risk.

Ok, so does that mean we don't have to  worry about our files and things on our current forum?

Exactly. We make backups of the forums at regular intervals and therefore if anything does happen to your forum we will be able to restore it to a recent condition.

It is always nice to take a little time and find that the question I have, has already been asked and promptly answered as well. I always look first and ask later, in an effort to avoid asking similar questions more than once. Well as usual, the answers were waiting for me before I had to ask. Thank you everyone for all of your contributions, it really helps us new folks a lot. uglystupid2 I appreciate all of you!!!
