Same software. SMF For Free has extra features that are not built into simplemachines. You would need to have your own host if you wanted to install the software itself and is not as easy to do.

Simplemachines is the creator of SMF software. Those guys decide what is being added to the new versions that are being released, and supply people like us, and SMFForFree with the necessary files to host.
SMFForFree has taken that software from Simplemachines, and added features, tweaked it, and is hosting it for us to use. Saves us the troubles and headaches of having to host it ourselves. He takes care of all the technical stuff for you.

Simplemachines.org and SMFForFree are two completely different companies but both are using the same type of forum software.

Hence the name SMF (Simple Machines Forum)

SMFForFree is just the SMF software, but free. Also, like SMF said (The admin here, just to clear any confusion), this service has some more extra features that do not automatically come with the software.

Yes, I guess you could say it is better, because it is free, but SMFForFree is  Simple Machines.
