Forum Url: http://extr3m3gaming.smfforfree4.com
How is a site like http://pogoinslowmo.smfforfree.com/ so popular?
I've tried to make just about everysite:
Moparscape
Runescape
Xbox 360
PS3
Glitching
Clans
Graphics
PhotoShop
GIMP
-------------------
I advertise it on Google,YouTube,Yahoo,SMF,and everywhere else I can.
Nobody joins my forum?
Why is this? :S
You would think the one about Mopar would have a lot of posts, not pogofinishers?

Probably because the ones you choose are spread so thin.

Nutz does have a point.
Try to come up with something different/unique.
When there are 500 forums that all have the same theme/idea,  same stylesheet, same chatbox etc. -  I would think it would be very difficult to keep it active.

Hard to not make it the same.
I have no ideas on what I want it to be,I want it to be a general forum, something I like and can post about, not just 1 thing.

Then make it with alot of things.Try making codes for your own forum,Make a banner,Try to make a unique stylesheet,Or you can request some unique things.Theres pretty much alot of things out there you can do to make your forum popular. But first i think you should start telling your friends then advertise and clean out every post thats 30 days old that doesnt have much post in it.Thats a good way to start you could make atleast 500 post by only 20 or 10 members. Then by 50 or 100 you might have 1500.

True, but if it's all mindless prattle, it's not very alluring to a potential new member.

I have no ideas on what I want it to be,I want it to be a general forum, something I like and can post about, not just 1 thing.

A couple of pointers from a quick visit I took by your site.

1. It's redundant to have a banner with the url in it when you're already there. Plus it's too tall.

2. Overkill on the 'welcome'

3. Chatbox exhibits no control of the site.

Members on my forum recommended the chatbox.
Easier way to communicate

Keep in mind this is all personal preference on my part and opinions.. take it for what its worth Wink

Chatbox's are popular but I've found that when you have a chatbox on a site that people tend to use the chatbox and not post.    When they are open to Guests to use you also risk a lot of driveby stupid posts and it can wind up making the forum look bad.    If you want one and your members want one it would be better to put it in a board description and set that board so its not viewable to Guests.

Nutz is right about the banner.   I would put the title of your forum there and take off the url.   Its not necessary.

Hiding all boards is a huge turnoff to a lot of people when they go to a forum to check it out.
They can see nothing and have nothing to go on.   It leaves nothing that jumps out at them and says  "Hey,  I want to join in on this"    Many times people just leave and do not bother to register because of this.    People tend to hide them thinking that people WILL join to see what is there.   That really doesnt happen that much.

Also no offence to SMF and the service we get here but you cant expect to get a popular forum if its just on a .smfforfree4.com domain and nothing else.

Get some cheap hosting and create a homepage for your website. It will draw in lots more people if you have your own domain and a good looking website.

Ive got one and now im even considering setting up my own forum on my hosting which then removes all the limits etc and u can customise even more.

Especially when the board goes down several days in a row for several minutes at a time. It doesn't leave the members as well as guests and "potential" members with a feeling of confidence, and anyone looking to check out the board when it's down might not even come back a second time.

Forum Url: http://ourhangout.smfforfree4.com
I have to disagree. My forum members understand
that at times their will be problems with the servers.
If you keep them informed about what is going on
with the down time and assure them that changes
are being made to make the overall forum expierence
better, they understand. Part of having a good forum
I think is to be involved with your members.
I appreciate all that SMF does for our FREE
Forums. Your forum will be as good as you the Admin
allow it to be. I added another place my members can
meet when there is down time. If you dont keep
your site interesting or it is over done (too busy)
it will keep members from coming back. I see that alot
where people add to many codes. Most important I
feel is to sit back, look at your forum and ask yourself
is this a site I would want to participate in?

Good point Isaiah's Grandma, you need to kick back and relax, if you know you wouldn't participate in registering, you know no one else would.
