The ads themseleves aren't really that bad just some textlinks added in some other places.

HGage..   as I just asked SMF about,  if you have Ad FRee Impressions you will not see those ads.
              My forum has ad free at the moment from making some graphic ads for SMF.   They will
              run out very soon and you will then see those ads on my forum..

You can pay to have the ads removed from your forum.

Click the Upgrade This Forum Link at the bottom of your forum.
You can also clik the link above here:  Order Ad Free Credits and Upgrades.

They are, as implied,  Ad Free Credits.    You get a certain amount of them, for a certain price.
Each "credit" is a page load, refresh, etc.     So,  if you buy 25000,   your forum will have 25000
page loads without any advertisements.

Sometimes SMF For Free wants you to make buttons and banners etc and you can get ad free credits
